SYSTEC - mission & strategy

The mission of SYSTEC consists in R&D activities in the core areas of

  • Systems, Control, Optimization, and Estimation

  • Networked Robotic Vehicle and Systems

  • Power Electronics for Transport and Energy,

in order to

  • deepen the knowledge targeting the progress in high-impact academic, societal, industrial, and entrepreneurial challenges,

  • contribute to innovation through the valorization and transfer of knowledge and products and, thus, promote industrial leadership in the context of the smart specialization agenda.

The research agenda of SYSTEC is clearly aligned with the three H2020 pillars:

  • Pillar I – Scientific Excellence - by delivering scientific excellence and novel networked robotic vehicle and energy systems in the context of future emerging technologies.

  • Pillar II – Industrial leadership - by contributing to smart energy systems in buildings and appliances, novel networked robotic vehicle systems (ICT).

  • Pillar III - Societal challenges – by providing key enabling technologies for: secure, clean and efficient energy, green transportation systems, adaptation to climate change, disaster resilience, monitoring the environment, security, and sustained exploitation of marine resources.

The strategy for the interplay between R&D and Innovation is deployed by 3 Thematic Lines: SYSTEC-CONTROL, SYSTEC-NET, and SYSTEC-ENERGY.

SYSTEC uses existing infrastructures and resources of FEUP and ISR to promote:

i) academic excellence,

ii) worldwide networking with institutions and researchers with opportune scientific affinities to ensure the critical mass,

iii) interaction with end-users and stakeholders to promote the tuning with challenge-driven innovation dynamics, and

iv) integration with advanced formation activities.

This strategy will enable SYSTEC to maintain the tradition of ISR-Porto of being one of the most successful Portuguese R&D units regarding competitiveness for European funding as shown by taking into account its size and its position in the ranking of Incentives FCT 2013 and 2014.
